As temperatures gradually rise and lawns enter their growth period, many users encounter problems when trying to start their lawnmowers after they've been idle all winter. These problems include the cord not moving, buttons becoming unresponsive, or the machine stalling after starting. There are four main types of faults that cause lawnmowers to fail to start after winter. Troubleshooting them in order of increasing difficulty can improve efficiency. The first is a fuel system fault, which is the main problem for gasoline engines: gasoline stored for more than 30 days will oxidize and deteriorate, clogging the fuel lines and carburetor; ethanol gasoline that is not emptied from the tank in winter will absorb water, leading to a fuel supply interruption.
Secondly, a low battery charge is common in electric lawnmowers. During winter when they are not in use, both lithium and lead-acid batteries will self-discharge, and storing them without a full charge can easily lead to deep discharge or even damage. Lithium-ion models can be woken up by pressing and holding the start button for 10 seconds, while lead-acid models require a dedicated charger. If the machine still cannot start after charging, the battery needs to be replaced.
Thirdly, there may be issues with the spark plugs and air filter. Spark plugs are prone to carbon buildup, moisture, or electrode wear. Cleaning the carbon buildup and adjusting the gap to 0.6-0.8 mm will resolve the issue. Severely worn spark plugs need to be replaced. Accumulated debris in the air filter can lead to insufficient air intake. Gently tapping the filter to remove the dust will resolve the issue. Severely clogged air filters need to be replaced.
In addition, accidental triggering of safety switches is easily overlooked. If the parking brake is not released, the cutter head is not raised, or the seat switch for seated models is not pressed, the start-up will be locked. Resetting each of these steps will eliminate the potential hazard.
After troubleshooting, the following procedures must be followed when starting the engine: For gasoline engines, press the carburetor manual pump 3-5 times; for electric motor engines, start the engine after it is fully charged and there are no fault indications. After starting, let the engine idle for 3-5 minutes and check for idling speed, oil leaks, and abnormal noises to avoid secondary malfunctions.
Lawn mower starting malfunctions can be avoided through proper maintenance. Routine and seasonal maintenance can reduce malfunctions and extend equipment life.
Routine maintenance should be performed after each use: clean debris from the blade disc, check the blade sharpness and sharpen or replace if necessary, and check oil lines and wiring connections; for electric models, clean the battery contacts; for gasoline models, check the engine oil level.
Seasonal maintenance focuses on the winter and summer off-seasons: Before winter off-season, gasoline engines should have their old oil drained and the oil changed; electric engines should have their batteries fully charged and stored separately, with monthly top-ups. The engine body should be cleaned, rust-preventive oil applied, and then stored in a dry, well-ventilated area. Before summer off-season, the carburetor, spark plugs, and filter should be cleaned, fuel drained, and rust-preventive measures applied. A comprehensive inspection and maintenance should be performed before starting the engine in the spring to ensure all components are functioning correctly.
